They’re cute.  They’re cuddly, and oh so sweet.  Who doesn’t like watching playful kittens running around, jumping on each other and going after anything that moves.   Unfortunately, too much of a good thing, even sweet, snuggly kittens, can be a disaster.

It’s kitten season.  The time starting in early spring, peaking in late spring or early summer, and ending in fall when cats give birth, inundating shelters and rescues with litters of homeless kittens.  Caring for an overwhelming number of cats has its own set of problems.  Increased number of cats brings increased risk of illness.  Increased number of kittens brings increased chances an adult cat will be overlooked for adoption in lieu of a kitten.

Reducing the number of kittens dropped off at shelters and rescues will not happen overnight or without your help.  Here are some ways YOU can make a difference in your community.

Spay & neuter your cats

Pet overpopulation is a huge problem.  The best way to combat the problem is by spaying and neutering your pet.  Do not let your pet add to the already overwhelming number of homeless pets, even by accident.  Do your part because it’s “Hip to Snip.”

Donate supplies, money or your time.  Contact your local shelters and rescues to find out their greatest need.  You might even think about volunteering at adoption events.

Become a foster cat parent

Contact your local shelters and rescues about their fostering program.

Adopt a cat or Sponsor a cat adoption

More than anything, our cute cats need loving homes.  Opening your heart and home to a homeless cat is an amazing way to save a life.

Don’t sit on the sidelines and leave it to someone else.  Get involved and make a difference.
